Unfortunately there is no sure fire scientific formula for choosing the right domain name. Even names that were supposed to be the "ultimate" name are failing. Companies that choose the one word generic domain names such as pets.com are going under, there is even talk that the company which paid 7.5 million for business.com is having problems. According to a recent article that we read, these names (although very short) are too generic and do not have the long time branding power of such names as yahoo and wentel.

To help in the choosing of the right domain name we have developed a few very simple rules.

Rule Number 1:
Register your business name (if possible). Although this rule will contradict the next rule, we believe that it is important to register your business name as well. This will assist anyone that knows of your business find you again. There are many times that we will know of a business and will type in their name to try and find them.

Rule Number 2:
If someone sees your domain name written somewhere, will they have an idea of what you do? This rule contradicts Rule Number 1 in that your business name is not always what you do. If your company registers the domain name 123inc.com - we have no idea what this business does or produces. Always try to get at least one keyword in your domain name. The name "bobswidgets.com" is much better than "bob.com". If your business name describes what you do, you are set, if not register two domain names. For the little extra in fees per year ($12.95 per domain) it will be well worth it.

Rule Number 3:
If someone hears your web site verbally (either on your radio ad or over the phone) will they be able to understand it? we laugh every time we hear an ad on the radio and they spend most of their time spelling out their Web site address. we just think wouldn't they rather use that valuable air time for more constructive purposes like selling their products. This rule implies you will never use abbreviations in your domain name, we find abbreviations (although they shorten the name) harder to understand. Avoid the use of abbreviations at all costs, they will not benefit you in any way.
